Collaborative Learning Centre to Open at Maplestone
Collaborative Learning Centre to Open at Maplestone
The clients and employees of Maplestone Enhanced Care are embarking on an exciting, new initiative in the education of health professionals.
Back in October, 2009, a new model of physician care was adopted at Maplestone through an agreement with the Department of Family Medicine at Dalhousie University. Under this new approach, medical students accompany physicians on their client rounds to learn firsthand about supporting clients in a long term care setting.
Shannex, in collaboration with Dalhousie University, is now establishing a Collaborative Learning Centre at Maplestone to provide a valuable hands-on learning experience for students of various health disciplines. By interacting with clients, families and employees on a daily basis, students will gain an understanding of what it means to care for an elderly population, and be better prepared to support nursing home clients in a multi-disciplinary team setting.
Starting in February, first year Family Practice residents from Dalhousie Medical School will begin a four month residency program at Maplestone. An internship for nurse practitioner students will also begin this month, and as the Collaborative Learning Centre evolves, other health disciplines, as well as other universities and educational institutions, will be involved. Renovations have been completed at Maplestone to create teaching and student space.
With the creation of the Centre, Maplestone becomes the first long term care facility in Canada to serve as an academic learning site for students of all health disciplines. The outcomes and learnings from this initiative, we believe, will enhance client care throughout Shannex and ultimately benefit all long term care clients wherever they may reside.
