About Long Term Care

When you live in a Shannex long term care community, it is your home. As such, we believe you should have a say in the kind of foods we serve, guide the activities we plan and understand how we operate. We also believe in sharing information about the standards we are required to adhere to through the Department of Health and Wellness (DHW) in Nova Scotia 

Accessing Long Term Care in Nova Scotia

The Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness manages the process for entering into long term care in the province. To apply for residency in a nursing home or a residential care facility, contact Continuing Care toll-free at 1-800-225-7225 to learn more about the application process, to arrange for a Care Coordinator to assess your care needs, and identify the best method of having your needs met.

Accreditation and Licensing  


In addition to meeting required departmental standards, Shannex is committed to excellence in service and care. We fully appreciate that there are always ways to make things better. We are accredited through Accreditation Canada and have been voluntarily participating in this process since 1993. The accreditation process measures organizations against national standards of excellence in healthcare and helps ensure that we are always improving quality and following best practices. 

Currently, all Shannex long term care communities in both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are Accredited with Commendation. Our next accreditation cycle will take place in 2021.

Nova Scotia Licensed Long Term Care Home Standards and Inspection Reports

In Nova Scotia, long term care homes are licensed by the Department of Health and Wellness.

Each community participates in two yearly inspections, one announced and one unannounced, to ensure adherence to more than 400 requirements, which are outlined in the Homes for Special Care Act.

Shannex cooperates fully in the licensing process. When the licensing visit report indicates areas to be addressed, we respond with corrective action plans that include timing for when the issue will be addressed.

Our licensing reports are posted online and at each location with results shared at regular Resident and Family Council meetings. This gives residents and families an opportunity to review the results, discuss corrective actions and answer any questions about these reports.

Resident Safety and Health Information   

At Shannex, the safety and protection of our residents are our main priority. We are committed to a continuous improvement initiatives, including our Quality Improvement Plan (QIP), discussed in more detail below. In addition to our own processes, the Government of Nova Scotia has a reporting process called The Protection of Persons in Care Act (PPCA), which Shannex fully supports.

Nova Scotia Protection of Persons in Care Act

The Protection of Persons in Care Act (PPCA) is an external protective safeguard for residents in Nova Scotia’s long term care homes.

This Act requires long term care home administrators and service providers (including staff and volunteers) to promptly report all allegations or instances of abuse. Anyone can report abuse under the Act.

Under this Act, abuse may include physical, psychological, emotional, sexual, neglect, theft, or medication abuse.

We are extremely supportive of this important tool. The process is clearly explained for all licensed providers, but if you have questions, we would be happy to meet with you to discuss your concerns.

Pressure Injury Information

Often, residents in long term care face unique and complex health circumstances. While pressure injuries are rare, seniors and people with illnesses that make it difficult to move regularly are at a higher risk. For this reason, Shannex has had a process in place for many years to track and monitor pressure injuries. In 2018, we introduced some enhancements to these processes through an organization-wide Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) in wound prevention and management. This QIP includes a number of activities that focus on supporting our team members and improving communication with residents and families. 

Clinical teams at both the community and organizational levels have been hard at work on this QIP for many months and we are very pleased with the progress being made.

In March 2019, the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness released a Wound Management Policy for Nursing Homes and Residential Care Facilities in the province. You can read this policy here. Under these new directives, all licensed nursing homes in Nova Scotia are required to submit wound care data at the end of each month. In Compliance with this policy, Shannex homes in the province began posting their data in April 2019. These policy directives have also been added to the Long-Term Care Program Requirements and are part of the bi-annual licensing inspections.

Resident and Family Councils

Each long term care community has its own separate Resident Council and Family Council. These purpose of these groups, which are established by the management at their site, is to allow residents and families to come together to discuss shared concerns and opportunities for improvement in their homes. Resident and Family Councils are an important part of every home and we are extremely grateful to those who actively collaborate with us to ensure that each community reflects the people who live there.

Resident and Family Advisory Committee

The idea to create a Resident and Family Advisory Committee was generated in late 2016 as a way to enhance efforts to meaningfully engage with residents and their families and provide opportunities for greater involvement at a strategic level.  

The first committee met in 2016 and included members with diverse backgrounds and lived experience at Shannex and Parkland communities. Their mandate is to advise the organization on resident care and service delivery matters in the best interest of all residents and families being served in Shannex, Parkland and Faubourg communities.  

This year, the committee was divided into two separate groups: one for Nova Scotia and Ontario and a second for New Brunswick. This allows each Committee to focus on topics closer to home. The two committees remain connected and will meet annually.
