Shannex on track to become first seniors’ living organization in Canada to achieve ISO 50001 certification

April 22, 2021 –Shannex announced today it will seek ISO 50001 certification within two years and is on track to be the first seniors’ living organization to receive ISO certification in Canada. The ISO 50001 standard requires companies to adopt a strict set of energy management objectives, guidelines and practices that result in energy efficiency and reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Shannex is proud to have been chosen to receive funding for our ISO 50001 certification project from Natural Resources Canada as one of six organizations in Canada that will participate in the program.

“There is no better day than Earth Day to increase our commitment to protecting the environment with an action plan that will transform the way we prioritize sustainability,” said Jason Shannon, President and Chief Operating Officer. “We take a sustainable approach to every community we build, but there is no denying we need to do more to reduce the devastating affect climate change is having on our planet. The time is right to take the next step toward to create a better future.”

A sustainability task force made up of Shannex leaders and other experts has been formed to lead the organization in the development of a sustainability framework and to identify clear organizational carbon emission reduction targets to be achieved over the next five years. Recognizing that real change must be supported by individual efforts, sustainability committees made up of employees, residents and family members will also be formed at each Shannex, Parkland and Faubourg location. These groups will be empowered to identify and action initiatives that will have a direct impact on how their own community manages its energy, waste, consumables and water.

Elinor Egar Reynolds, is a resident at Parkland at the Gardens in Halifax, N.S. and a member of the community’s Green Earth Committee. Elinor recognizes that personal commitment is needed to make real change. “I am encouraged to see Shannex take steps to increase its commitment to protect our planet,” she says. “This is a huge job and we must all do our part to learn and to fix this climate emergency. It will take dedication, hard work and creativity.”
